The start of the school year often brings new questions, meetings, paperwork, and decisions for families of children with disabilities. While parents and caregivers are essential members of the educational team, many families are not fully aware of the rights and protections available to them under special education law.
Knowledge is one of the strongest tools families can have.
This workshop is designed to help parents, caregivers, and family members better understand their rights within the special education process. Participants will learn about important protections, how families participate in educational decision-making, and strategies for advocating effectively throughout the school year.
Our goal is not to turn families into legal experts. Instead, we want families to leave feeling more informed, confident, and prepared to participate as active members of their child's educational team.
Whether your child is newly receiving special education services or you have years of experience navigating the system, understanding your rights can help you make informed decisions and feel more confident when working with your school team.
Professionals who support children and families are also encouraged to attend to strengthen their understanding of family engagement and special education advocacy.
We invite you to join us as we continue the Back-to-School Special Education Success Series: One Step at a Time, Empowering Families Navigate Special Education.
Format:
This session will take place on Zoom as a live group presentation. Participants may share comments and questions using the chat and Q&A features throughout the workshop.
