AUTISM INITIATIVE

The Autism Initiative Project is offering the following free programs for participant families, who meet eligibility criteria:
 
Afterschool art program: “Friends are We! Building Social Skills through the Arts"
The focus of the afterschool program is the development of social skills for children diagnosed in the autism spectrum disorder. Child and parent will explore various visual art forms in an interactive environment.
 
Program Eligibility:
 
Bronx residents between ages 3 and 13 years who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, not eligible for OPWDD services or OPWDD HCBS waiver programs (or who are in the in the process of OPWDD eligibility). We can accept up to 2 participants per session from other boroughs.
In addition, accepted families will receive additional support services, such as autism awareness education, coping skills training and linkage to other available services for their children.
 
Program will offer 3 sessions and family should select one:
 
Sessions will take place at Sinergia Inc. unless noted.
 
Session I:
Every Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm October 12, 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 30 December 3, 7, 14, 2016,
Saturday, December 3rd session will take place @ the Children’s Museum of the Arts located at 103 Charlton Street NYC, 10014
 
Session II:
Every Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 April 5, 19, 26, May 3, 6 2017
Saturday, May 6th session will take place @ the Children’s Museum of the Arts located at 103 Charlton Street NYC, 10014
 
Spring Break 2017:
Daily from 9:30 am to 11:30 am from April 11th through April 15th, 2017.
Last session, Saturday April 15th, will take place @ the Children’s Museum of the Arts, located at 103 Charlton St, New York, NY 10014

“The Integrated Transition Program” for ASD Teens & Parents
This program will implement evidence-based strategies for self-determination and self-advocacy skills, components for the transition to adulthood, and community-based learning for ASD young adults and provides informational workshops for parents too.

Program Eligibility:
 
For Participants:
 
At this time, the program is designed for young adults between the ages of 14 and 21, who are:
-resident of the Bronx (we can accept up to 2 participants from other boroughs)
-who is not eligible for OPWDD services or OPWDD HCBS waiver programs or who is in the process of seeking eligibility for OPWDD services
-who is verbal
-who is able to be in group setting with facilitator support
-who will attend entire group series (no more than 3 absences) and who are able to communicate in English.
 
For parent:
 
Parent should:
 
-be able to speak either English or Spanish or both
-attend entire group series (no more than 3 absences)
-provide IEP / evaluation to indicate diagnosis of child
-specify areas of strengths / challenges of child
-specify parental areas of needs / information

As children approach the age of five, parents have to think in terms of the transition from preschool to kindergarten (CPSE to CSE). Entering kindergarten will be a new experience and may require adjustments on your child’s part. Kindergarten is a big step in any child’s life, for a child with disabilities, being ready for that step often requires planning. Transition planning will help you and your child navigate the move to kindergarten more easily and successfully.

En esta oportunidad tendremos la visita del Sr. Christopher Noel, Accessibility Coordinator del Departamento de Parques de la Ciudad de Nueva York, quien compartirá información sobre los diferentes programas disponibles para individuos con discapacidades en NYC, incluyendo clases de natación.
