Support Sinergia

Sinergia serves some of New York City’s most vulnerable children, adults with disabilities and their families. It is often the place of last resort for many. Below are real life stories tlife stories that give you a glimpse of the plight of the individuals and families we serve:

Imagine that you are poor, lack the basic necessities of life, are disabled or you are a single mother who doesn’t speak English and does not know how to find medical or educational services for her disabled child. Sinergia’s Parent Training and Information Center helps these mothers through individual advocacy, training and parent support groups.

Imagine that you a single mother who is developmentally disabled, has two little girls, ages 7 and 11 and your family has moved four times and lived in three different shelters in three different boroughs within a time span of three months. Sinergia helps this homeless family to secure permanent residential services with supports. With these supports the family will stabilize, stay intact and tend to the children’s education so they can attend a school in the community.

Imagine the lives of four mentally retarded individuals who live by themselves because their mother is in intensive care and terminally ill. Sinergia will assist these four individuals, manage and oversee their affairs, pay rent, utilities, purchase food and provide all the individual supports necessary to help them with their daily living needs so that these siblings may remain together in their own home.

Imagine you are a little girl of six and you have been out of school because you don’t have a wheel chair. Sinergia was able to arrange for a borrowed chair until Medicaid approved the purchase of a wheelchair and the child is now attending school.

Imagine that you are a person with developmental disabilities and you have lost all your relatives. How do you cope with the losses and the loneliness? Sinergia often serves as the person’s sole “family”. Our staff provides comfort, companionship and provides habilitation services. Sinergia sponsors many social and recreational activities such as our Annual Christmas Party, Dinner Dance for consumers, picnics, circus trips, ballgames and Great Adventure trips to break the isolation and increase socialization skills. Consumers and families have opportunities to share with one another through support groups, community living and Day Habilitation activities.

Fortunately many of us are so blessed that it is hard to imagine these circumstances or the barriers that our fellow citizens face. At Sinergia, we are so proud to celebrate our 30th Anniversary of providing services, offering hope, solace and refuge through our Parent Center Programs, Family Supports, Service Coordination, Respite, Day Habilitation and Residential and Housing Assistance Programs. Please take this opportunity to give generously and assist Sinergia in its service mission and help us to build a comprehensive training facility for parents, consumers, staff and community.

Thank you for taking the time to read our stories. We hope you will contribute and help Sinergia continue to give people hope, knowledge and services.
