Coping with Problem Behavior in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Presenter: Lauren Moskowitz, Ph.D. Assistant Professor. Department of Psychology, St. John's University.
Problem behaviors commonly occur in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. In this presentation, attendees will learn how to figure out the function or purpose of a child’s problem behavior and then a) prevent the problem behavior from occurring by altering a setting event or antecedent (e.g., prevention strategies), b) provide a response alternative to the problem behavior (e.g., teach replacement skills to replace the problem behavior) or c) change a consequence (e.g., response strategies), so that the problem behavior is less likely to occur in the future.
